I AM BOYCOTTING FACEBOOK UNTIL RUSSIAN ADS ARE MADE PUBLIC

As many of you know, I am a writer and a teacher.  I am also a citizen of our great nation and today, I have to take a stand against the corporate greed of Facebook.

When the hateful and malicious lies perpetrated by the Russian propaganda machine see the “light of day”, I hope that people will understand that these negative stories were designed to divide and weaken us as a nation by pitting us against each other.  Although Russia continues to deny interfering in our elections and our national discourse,  we know that as recently as the controversy over NFL players taking a knee during the national anthem, Russian internet trolls were pushing both sides of the argument.  According to Republican Senator James Lankford from Oklahoma, “We watched even this weekend, the Russians and their troll farms, and their Internet folks, start hash-tagging out ‘take a knee’ and also hash-tagging out ‘Boycott NFL.’”

“Early this month, Facebook announced the first hard evidence of Russian efforts to spread disinformation over social media during the election: 470 fake accounts and pages, which paid $100,000 to run thousands of advertisements apparently designed to heighten political tensions. Now, after weeks of uncertainty, the company has made the correct decision to share the ads with congressional investigators probing election interference. Next it should do the same for the public.”

I have written my elected officials encouraging them to aggressively pursue the investigation of Russian meddling in our national elections, and I have protested and marched to make my voice heard.  Today, I choose to boycott Facebook until it becomes transparent about the Russian advertising on Facebook.  This will be the last time I post on my Facebook page until I read that Facebook has become a better corporate citizen!  “The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good people to do nothing!” and I refuse to do nothing! Please join me by boycotting Facebook until they release the information on Russian advertising to the public.
